~ WRITE YOUR LIFE STORY ~

Have you ever wondered about the past generations that left their homeland, family & friends to spend months on a ship sailing to a new & unknown land? Have you ever asked yourself why they did that? What was life like on the ship?

Imagine if they had written their life story or left a diary! A hundred years from now our descendants may be asking similar questions about us! Your life story is your own; it’s up to you how you design it and what you put in it.

Write YOUR life story now! People experience so many things in life, and yet many never write it down! When we're old (and forgetful) our children & grandchildren may ask us about our lives. WRITE IT DOWN NOW! I'm writing my life story NOW, instead of waiting until I'm old when I'll more than likely forget the details.

Write down as much detail as you want to. When I think of a particular event that happened when I was a child, I write it down ASAP. That way, I'll get it down before I forget about it. It's good to keep a journal to write all of this in.

Don't keep scraps of paper here & there, keep it all in one journal book. Keep adding to it as you go through your life. The best time to write it down is when it's happening! You'll remember much more detail NOW as it's happening.

Go through all those family photo albums. If you have family movies on VHS tapes (or DVD's, etc.) watch them again. This will trigger a lot of memories for you to write down. BE HONEST. Write about the way things were, not how you wish they had been. Include humor. Life wasn’t always serious. Share some wisdom but don’t lecture. You can divide your journal up into life's stages: baby, school years, high school, young adult, adult, retirement. You can also divide it into subjects: birth, toys, school, pets, important days in history.

When you feel you've covered all that you want to, put it all together in chronological (by date) order. Build your story year by year. Include, but don't limit yourself to, the following:

What is your full (maiden) name?
When were you born?
Where were you born?
Were you named after anyone?
Were you the only child?
If you had / have brothers and/or sisters, give their full names.
Who are/were your parents (mother's maiden name)?
Where have you lived?
Where did you go to school?
Did you have any pets?
Who were your school friends?
Did you attend church?
Did you visit your grandparents?
What were you like as a teenager?
Did you learn to drive?
Did you work while in high school?
Where did you work?
Who, when & where did you marry?
List names of your children, birth dates & birth places.
Where were you & what were you doing on significant historical dates?

You can add your thoughts as they occur to you, and then get it all down in chronological order. Visit the places where you lived as a child. This will bring back memories of events that you can write down. Take your journal with you on your trips to childhood places.

Also include as much about your family ancestry as you know. It's important to record our stories & pass them down to our descendants. Everybody has a story! If you don't tell it, who will?
